Kaysaria, Israel

Description

Midway between Tel Aviv and Haifa, on Israel's Mediterranean coast, Caesarea is Israel's ancient port city on the northern Caesarea Maritima. The modern city owes its name to the nearby ancient city of Caesarea Maritima, built by Herod the Great around 25-13 BC as an important port. It served as the administrative center of the province of Judea (later called Palaestine Syria) in the Roman Empire and, later, as the capital of the Byzantine province of Palaestina Prima.
